Twin Flame vs. Soulmate

There is a story in Greek mythology stating that originally humans were created with four (4) arms, four (four) legs, a head with two (2) faces, and both sexual parts, a hermaphrodite. This being was complete onto itself. They were very powerful beings, and being such, Zeus, the king of all gods, (in Greek mythology) became fearful of their power. If Zeus was the king of all gods, what did he have to fear, is a question that came to my mind, but this is just a myth? So he split the hermaphrodites apart, creating a separate man and woman, leaving them to look for their other half. So thus it begins!
The definition of a TWIN FLAME (from mindbodygreen.com) is an “intense soul connection with someone thought to be the person’s other half—mirror soul.” This definition fits into Greek mythology, a person’s other half.
However, how does this belief affect our personal lives? Walt Disney really did a disservice with the phrase, “Someday my prince will come” and for the men, someday my princess will come. Are we destined to look forever for our “split apart”? And when we do think we found them, how can that change our lives?
I do believe there is more than one soul mate out there for us, but according to womenshealthmag.com there is only one “twin flame”. It seems we have been programmed from youth, society, religion, etc., to believe there is a “right” person who is also searching for us.
So let’s try to break this down. According to Elizabeth Gilbert – “People think a soul mate is your perfect fit, and that’s what everyone wants. But a true soul mate is a mirror, the person who shows you everything that is holding you back, the person who brings you to our own attention so you can change your life.”
So what is the perceived difference between a “twin flame” and a “soul mate”? There is a belief that you can have many soul mates, but there is only one “twin flame”, your split apart. Both the “twin flame” and the “soul mate” come into our lives to help us grow, not only mentally, but spiritually. They could be a being from a past life, another dimension, or planet. They also can be animals, and maybe even places. I know it seems far-fetched, but when you have lived as long as I have, you will have many experiences that will challenge your beliefs.
In both the “twin flame” and “soul mate” experience there are many similarities. There is a magnetic pull towards that person that could feel very sexual/sensual, a sense of familiarity, you also may share an intense psychic connection, there can be a mirroring of each others fears that can create challenges in the relationship. You may have a kundulini awakening when you meet, creating havoc with your body, mind, and spirit, taking you down the rabbit hole of thoughts, sensations, and feelings. Sometimes the other person does not feel the connection, most likely because they have numbed down their senses, not allowing themselves to feel anything.
In our fast-paced society, we have forgotten how to make personal, face-to-face connections. We use our cell phones/computers to make short-lived connections, searching for the one, but not investing in the one on one time. Although we feel a connection, a draw to a certain person, it takes communication and time spent together.
I believe we are our own “twin flame” being both masculine and feminine in our Spirit’s energies. In the energy work that I do in my practice, the right side of a person’s body represents their masculine energies and the left side represents their feminine energies. However, we need to help balance those energies and dive deep into ourselves to balance ourselves. It is a journey into self, a true awakening of your inner “twin flame/soul mate” energies. The journey takes you out of your old learned patterns and into a new view of life. It is a very different way of looking, experiencing, and feeling yourself.
As you journey through your lifetime, you will meet many people who do come into your life that you are attracted to, and knowing they are there for a reason and a season, enjoy the journey. Try not to get lost in the “Disney” scenario this Valentine’s season. Remember, we are here on this earth plain as pure spirit first and foremost, to experience life through our senses, taste, touch, sight, hearing, smell, and intuition. Be open and be curious to experience what spirit has in your future. We are on this earth plain together to learn from each other.
This is a poem I wrote a while ago after I met a “soul mate”, one of many, but the most spiritually demanding.
How can the pain be so deep?
How can the pain be so deep? It reaches into the recesses of my marrow and tears it apart. A pick is boring into my soul, hacking out the archaic, misplaced memories that I left on my shelf of dreams, waiting for someone to reach in and find them. Who is willing to pierce my armor with their fears, so I see through my mirror image when I look into their eyes?
Absence of feeling, or am I drowning in an ocean of sentiment. The abyss of my longing. Will my wait ever be over? Or will I pause to see their reflection attached to my soul. Superimposed, self-deception on a pilgrimage to redemption. This journey I live, seeks consolation. At what cost is the price too dear? My life, spread like butter melting on a hot plate, offered up as a secondary for the bread.
I dig into the sinew of life, exposing bone. Untrained feelings awaken my senses. Life’s hunger unleashed. Merging mirror images intersect, as their reflection shatters. What we seek in each other is first found in ourselves. Truth lies below the marrow.
