Don't Make Assumptions
The main problem with making assumptions is that we believe they are the truth even if they are not. Sometimes we make assumptions about what others are thinking or doing. Of course, because that is not enough for us, we then take whatever we think they are thinking or doing personally.
Now let’s just consider this a little closer. We assume what someone is THINKING. Umm….now unless you are blessed with mind reading how do you know that?
The hard truth is you don’t. Byron Katie, a well known author, uses this idea. You make a statement about someone. “That person will never be my friend”. Bryon Katie then says “are you sure this will never happen? Do you know absolutely, 100% that this will never occur?” Nope you don’t. Assumption.
And in outset of our cell phone era assuming takes on even more of a dilemma. Someone texts you and they have an attitude or a tone. How’s that? How do you get an attitude or tone from text? In our “electronic times” making assumptions is even worse.
So. What is the answer to assumptions? Questions. If you really want the truth you have to ask the person you are making assumptions about questions as to what they are thinking or feeling. If it is a situation then you must investigate and know the facts. Unfortunately we have been raised to be fearful of questioning when in fact we should be more fearful of not questioning. Because we are afraid to ask for clarification, we make assumptions that we believe to be true. Of course then we have to defend our assumptions to make someone else wrong. It becomes personal. We just set ourselves up for suffering. Assumptions can cause us way more pain then facts do.
Not making assumptions is a practice. So when you catch yourself doing it stop, take a breath and question your assumption. Question yourself. Hold your tongue and think it through. Then ask questions This practice can make your life much easier and more peaceful.
Blessings…
