The Healing Power of Letting Go
In my years of studying energy work, one of the authors I have learned so much from is Carolyn Myss. She is an author, medical intuitive, and teacher. In her book Defy Gravity, she talks about healing and what that requires of us. She has a somewhat different thought process than others, and I found it very interesting and helpful. I hope you do too.
The subtitle of her book is: Healing Beyond the Bounds of Reason. Her second chapter is called The First Truth: You can't reason with illness, crisis, or God.
In this chapter, she talks about the need to know why things happen to us. If we are denied the explanation for experiences or events that happened to us, we feel powerless. Particularly when they redirect our lives. Myss states that when she spoke with people who had described their healing process to her, they had said the first thing that they needed to do was give up the need to know why this happened to them. She stated that until you can give up knowing why, you hold on to all your emotional wounds, and though your mind wants to heal, your heart is not in agreement. Thus the step of forgiveness becomes crucial. That word can bring about an immediate response from people. I’ve watched their faces, and you can almost hear their response of “Hell No!” What they don’t realize is that this act, forgiveness, releases them from having to know the whys of what you can never know and vengeance in wanting others to suffer because they have hurt you in some way. The problem is you can't reason forgiveness. It’s much bigger than reason. It is absolutely something you do because you have dropped ego and just know that it is in your best interest. Surrendering the need to know why is an act of “course correction” that others are responsible for our lives and an act of faith. You have the opportunity to walk away from an old wound as a much happier and lighter person.
What about being negative, you ask? Doesn’t that affect your healing? We all are negative at
times. We all get discouraged and angry at certain situations. The key is to start choosing the positive. Baby steps. One day at a time, one positive thought at a time. Appreciation and gratefulness for the little things can change your outlook immensely.
In her book, Carolyn Myss used the example of Thomas Merton, who sat and looked around on a particularly hot day. He was noting the little things, the animals, the wind, the flowers, the simple and the beautiful. He then stated, “This day will never come again.” Never…
He was living in the moment, but more than that, he was appreciating his life just as it is.
I was moved by that statement, as was the Author.
Life is a roller coaster ride: Ups and downs, the supremely beautiful moments and the sad and hard-to-navigate moments as well. I think in the end we learn to appreciate our time on this earth and the people that encourage us, support us, and love us. We learn that love really is all there is and that we need to express it every day of our lives… because this day will never come again.
